Organisational Capability Index

Organisational capability, measured.

A clear, evidence-based understanding of what an organisation is truly capable of.

Strong organisations aren't built on instinct. They're built on capability.

Yet capability is surprisingly difficult to see. Strong fundraising can mask weak governance. A respected CEO can compensate for underdeveloped systems. Financial stability can hide leadership succession risks. Equally, organisations with extraordinary potential are often overlooked because their underlying strengths haven't been recognised.

Most organisations have an instinct for where their strengths and vulnerabilities lie. But instinct isn't the same as evidence.

The Organisational Capability Index (OCI) brings those strengths, vulnerabilities and opportunities into one clear picture. Not a compliance exercise. Not a report card. A structured diagnostic for better decisions.

What the OCI measures

The Organisational Capability Index assesses organisational capability across five dimensions and a set of independently assessed domains. Together they provide a comprehensive picture of an organisation's ability to translate purpose into sustained impact.

Unlike many assessment frameworks, the OCI doesn't reduce organisational capability to a single overall score. Each domain is assessed independently, ensuring genuine strengths are recognised and important vulnerabilities aren't hidden behind comfortable averages.

The five dimensions
Strategic Leadership
Leadership · Governance · Strategy

Whether direction is clear, decisions are accountable, and the board holds leadership to account.

Organisational Infrastructure
Systems · Operations · Technology & AI · Data, Evaluation & Impact Measurement

Whether the organisation has the systems, processes, technology and information needed to deliver consistently and effectively.

Financial Sustainability

People, Culture & Talent

Whether the organisation can attract, develop and retain the people it needs, while creating a culture where people can thrive.

What makes the OCI different

Many organisational reviews rely heavily on opinion. The Organisational Capability Index combines structured evidence with practical judgement to create a clearer understanding of organisational capability.

It is built by practitioners who have spent more than two decades founding, leading and scaling purpose-driven organisations. It is grounded in evidence rather than self-assessment, designed specifically for not-for-profits and social enterprises, and structured around five dimensions of organisational capability.

Above all, it is designed to strengthen organisations, not rank them.

Who it's for

Boards & CEOs

Gain an objective understanding of organisational capability, identify priorities for investment and strengthen the foundations for long-term success.

Philanthropists & Funders

Assess organisations consistently, understand capability across an entire portfolio and direct support where it can create the greatest long-term impact.

Organisations preparing for growth

Understand whether the capabilities needed for growth already exist, and where further investment will strengthen future performance.

Why organisational capability matters

Mission alone doesn't create impact. Capability does.

The strongest organisations aren't necessarily those with the biggest budgets or the highest profile. They're the organisations whose leadership, governance, people, systems and financial stewardship consistently enable them to deliver on their mission.

The fundamental question behind the OCI is simple: does capability depend on a person, or does it live in the organisation?

Organisations that rely on exceptional individuals are difficult to scale, difficult to sustain and vulnerable to change. Organisations that embed capability into the organisation itself become more resilient, more investable and better equipped to create lasting impact.
